First Sunday after Easter is Divine Mercy Sunday. It is n this very day that our Lord Jesus Christ Instituted the Sacrament of penance when He appeared to the Apostles He told them, ““Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” This is the foundation of what we have today as Divine Mercy.
Our Lord Jesus Christ died for the forgiveness of sin. Remember, when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Joseph He told Him that His wife, Mary will conceive and bear a Son. He shall be called Jesus for He will save His people from their sins. (Matthew 1:21) Jesus did not come to condemn us, He came to reconcile us to God and with one another. He came that we might have life in abundance (cf John 10:10)
At the Lord’s Supper our Lord Jesus Christ took the cup filled with wine. He gave thanks, and gave it to disciples, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. (Matthew 26:27-28). Our Lord Jesus Christ died on the Cross for the forgiveness of sin. His death brought reconciliation.
In the gospel of Luke 24:46-48 Jesus told his disciples after his resurrection, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these things.” Repentance and remission of sin is what our Lord Jesus commissioned his disciples to preach on.
The early Apostles did not digress; they were focused in preaching the message of repentance and forgiveness of sin. In Acts 3:17-19 Peter told his fellow Jews, “I know that you did it in ignorance, as did also your rulers. 18 But those things which God foretold by the mouth of all His prophets, that the Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled. 19 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out.” Hence, Repentance and forgiveness was the essence of the Apostolic preaching.
Through Divine Mercy God has revealed His true identity. Our God is indeed a Merciful God. In Exodus 34:6-7 God revealed Himself to Moses as “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering and abounding in goodness and truth, 7 keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin…” Indeed our God is slow to anger and rich in mercy. He is the Most Loving and Most Caring Being the world has ever known.
In the gospel of Luke 6:36 our Lord Jesus Christ told His followers to “Be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.” We are expected to love as our Heavenly Father is Loving. And we must be generous as our heavenly Father is generous. The early Apostles literary applied this teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ. According to the book of Acts 2:42-47, all who believed were together and had all things in common. They lived a life of fraternal sharing. This is the foundation of what we have today as the Corporal work of Mercy.
In 1 Peter 1:3-9 St. Peter wrote, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy we have been born anew to a living hope through the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” It is through the great Mercy of God that we are reborn and renewed. The Psalmist invites us to “Give praise to the Lord, for He is good; His mercy endures forever.” God love and mercy is forevermore.
