The Power of Patience and Perseverance

Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you! Dearly Beloved one in Christ, we are here to praise the name of the LORD. We are here to exalt His Holy name. The Psalmist is inviting all the peoples, all of us to praise God. And we shall continue to praise Him.

I want to share a message with you which I titled, The power of Patience and Perseverance.

A patient dog will always eat the fattest bone! One of the problems we are facing in our world today is the problem of impatient and hot temper. People are no longer patent with themselves. They are not even patient with their God. That is why you see them moving from one altar to another looking for solution where there is no solution.

The gospel of Matthew 15:21-28 presents the case of the most patient woman on earth. As Jesus went to the district of Tyre and Sidon a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely possessed by a demon.” This is   Prayer of Mercy!

The woman presented her case in a humble manner. Before presenting her intension she prayed for mercy. Prayer of mercy is indeed the most powerful form of prayer. God did not hesitate in answering the prayer of all those who humbled themselves. The Psalmist even declared in Psalm 51:17 “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A humble and contrite heart— O God, You will not despise.” Child of God, as you humble yourself before God He will never despise your prayer. He will surely answer you in Jesus name!

At first, Jesus did not pay attention to the woman. His disciples pleaded with him to send her away. They actually said to Jesus, “Send her away, for she is crying after us.” It was at that moment that Jesus, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” Does this not sound tribalistic? Was this statement not enough to discourage the woman?

Incidentally, the woman was not discouraged; instead she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” What a powerful prayer! Lord, help me! This woman knew that Jesus was the only one that could help her. As the Psalmist declared in Psalm 121:1-2 “I lift up my eyes to the hills— From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.” God is the only One that can help you! Human beings cannot help you. Whenever you are in need of help all you need to do is to cry to God, saying, LORD, help me! And God will surely help you.

To further test her patient Jesus answered the woman, saying, “It is not fair to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” Was Jesus referring to the woman as dog? Is this not an insult? But instead of picking offence the woman she said to him, politely, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” This is amazing! And this is wisdom in action.

At this moment Jesus could not hold back his admiration for the woman. He said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly. Can you now see the importance of patience and perseverance! The woman refused to give up. She refused to pick offence even when she was insulted. She is indeed a woman of great faith!

Child of God, if you want to succeed in life, then you must control your temper. Don’t pick offence unnecessarily. Be patient with yourself, your fellow human being and even with God. With patient and perseverance, you will surely succeed! Your prayers will be answered, your joy will be complete and it shall be well with you in Jesus name – Amen!

In addition to patience and perseverance the LORD says through the Prophet Isaiah 56:1-7 “Keep justice, and do righteousness, for soon my salvation will come, and my deliverance be revealed.” Child of God, as you live a just a righteous life God will surely deliver you and He will surely grant you salvation in Jesus name!

There is good news for all of you who are living in foreign land. If you are a foreigner, rejoice for God has remembered you. The LORD God declares, “The foreigners who join themselves to the Lord, to minister to him, to love the name of the Lord, and to be his servants, everyone who keeps the sabbath, and does not profane it, and holds fast my covenant these 1) I will bring to my holy mountain,  2) I will make them joyful in my house of prayer; 3) Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.”

Child of God, as you live uprightly these promises will surely come true in your life. Remember, the LORD will make you joyful in His house of prayer. And as St. Paul rightly declares in his letter to the Romans 11:29 the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable! No one will take away your joy! No one will take away your blessings. Goodness and Mercy shall follow you all the days of your life and you shall remain in the presence of God forever and ever!
